Gregory Alan Rutchik is a member of the firm's Intellectual Property Litigation Department located in our San Francisco Office.
Gregory's practice focuses on litigating on behalf of established private technology-based companies or creators that are authors or publishers, have branded products, provide technical services, or license software or technology. His aggressive litigation style is meted by his experience as a transactional lawyer, his interest in technology and business practicality. Attorney Rutchik's clients may be concerned by a competitor's actions, an employee who leaves with copies of their files or a business partner who fails to live up to its promise. Attorney Rutchik also has experience defending professionals that have been accused of promoting tax shelters. Gregory is comfortable in both State and Federal Court, as well as various arbitration fora.
Gregory's transactional practice focuses on preparing and negotiating a diverse set of agreements to commercialize, develop and distribute software and information technology. His experience includes general commercial and contractual law issues, in and out licensing and distribution agreements, technology development and maintenance agreements, agreements for technology related consulting services, telecommunications services and complex information technology outsourcing agreements. Current and former clients include children's book authors, managed infrastructure service providers, parking garage access control manufacturers, web hosts, adult entertainment businesses, embedded systems on a chip IC design firms, and manufacturers of branded computer accessories and men's grooming products.
He received a B.A. in American Studies from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1987. Gregory lived in Tokyo for two years after college and worked as a financial analyst first at the Bank of Tokyo's Dainana Securities and then at American Express Japan. After graduating from Temple Law School in Philadelphia, PA in 1992, Gregory returned to Japan as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Law where he applied his fluent Japanese to the study of the licensing of information technology among Japanese companies. Gregory joined Ostrolenk, Faber in New York specializing in patent and copyright litigation and advising clients of obtaining trademarks and branding. In 1998, Gregory joined the Information Technology Practice Group of Cooley Godward LLP in Palo Alto, California - a transactional practice - and then joined two clients as corporate counsel Noosh, Inc. and Loudcloud, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPSW). Most recently, Gregory was a partner in the firm Idell, Seitel & Rutchik LLP a full service entertainment and technology litigation and transactional practice located in San Francisco. In 2005, Gregory was awarded an LLM in Tax law with Honors from Golden Gate University, San Francisco.
Gregory is a member of the State Bar of California, the State Bar of Connecticut, the State Bar of New York, the Bar of the District of Columbia and the American Bar Association. He is currently the Vice Chair of the American Bar Association Sub-Committee on Copyrights: Pictorial, Graphic and Sculptural Works and the Co-editor of ATLA's Business Tort Section's Newsletter. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Pacific Region of the Anti-Defamation League. and a member of AIPAC's Washington Club.

Rutchik received a J.D. in 1992 from the Beasley School of Law, Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he was a member of the Dean's List. He received a B.A. in American Studies from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1987.
Atty. Rutchik was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Law from 1992 - 1993. His focus was the Licensing of technology by Japanese information technology companies. Upon completing his Fulbright, he published some of the results of his research in a work entitled Japanese Research Projects and Intellectual Property Rights (US Commerce Department, 1996). Rutchik has traveled throughout the world, lived in Tokyo for four years and speaks and reads fluent Japanese. He is also conversant in French.
